Just bought a new yamaha 450x. Wanted to run a high quality oil and was thinking about using Motul. What is the pros and cons between running a 5w40 vs a 10w40? Both are fully synthetic. Also who do you guys think makes the best oil filters? I have ran K&N in the past in other quads but have heard that WIX is better?? Any thoughts are much appreciated!! Thanks in advance

K&N (Champion) makes a great oil filter, had much better results with a K&N over the WIX. The WIX is built great but for some reason can cause ticking in some of my engines so the K&N would be my choice out of the two.

As for the oil, the 5w40 will have better cold viscometrics, so it will cover a wider range of temps thus will better serve you in the winter. Both are excellent oils but the 5w40 edges the 10w40 out.

I've looked at the Motul website recently and remember the 5w40 oil being API SL and the 10w40 being API SG. This means that the 10w40 will have more zinc and phosphorus...and that's a good think in that rocket ship you bought. Further the 10w40 should have less, or no, viscosity index improvers, meaning it will shear less. My vote is for the 10w40.

As far as filters go, I currently own 6 quads and race 4 of them and have used every brand of filter out there; can't tell a difference, except in the wallet. If it were me, I'd go to ebay and look for Hiflo in a six pack and keep them changed pretty regular along with the oil. Just because it's expensive, fancy, ester oil doesn't mean it's gonna last forever in your new X. I'd say 10 hours max, half that if you're racing it.

Enjoy your new ride, should be fun in your neck of the woods, I've seen some great riding up there in Pa. A good friend of mine down here moved from somewhere in Pa, he tells great stories about riding in coal country. Anyway, be safe and get your BRAAAAAAAAP on!

Not sure what type of light these numbers should/do shed on a choice. Any explantation/comments on them would be greatly appreciated!

CDDhowell,
lots of places to ride in PA. We have the "Black Dunes" basically huge piles of old burnt coal/bad coal that are [censored] near everywhere! However, since they figured out how to burn them in the powerplants they are slowly disappearing...
