it's a shame the program was discontinued without a proper replacement space transport system being developed...what in hades is gonna be used when larger parts & replacement sections of the international space station need to be delivered?!?

You can bet your left one that the shuttle wasn't retired until they knew that they could do the things that they wanted to do with the replacement for those activities, that was up and running.

Rest assured, that the replacement works...whatever it is.

There is NO replacement. They brought up some spares in the last few flights. If anything major fails it will likely be abandoned and eventually join the likes of Skylab and Mir.
 
Of course there's a replacement...for what they consider the important stuff.

Space station makes us feel good about what the money's really being spent on.
