starter-less engine starting using direct injection

An interesting idea that likely should be given a chance to prove itself. It may not be too much of a trick to always stop and engine with one cylinder in the compression stroke. Likely that is what usually stops the engine.
 
pretty true.

have a look at the ring-gear of a straigh 6, and you will see that the starter engages in 3 general areas.

The Mirlees straight 8 diesel at work has only 5 cylinders equiped to start, as that's as many (probably more) than are required to ensure a start under any given crank position.
