Just bought a new Craftsman riding mower with the 21 HP Briggs Platinum engine. Can't seem to find this info in the manual, so was wondering if anyone knows the oil capacity and what after market quality filters will fit this engine. Thanks.

I would guess 48 ounces. The Briggs will have a model code stamped on it separate from the mower that you can use to find out for sure.

Usually 1.25 qts (40 Oz) is norm for that size of B&S motor. Wix makes filters for just about all Briggs motors. My 19 HP b&s intek uses Briggs filter 492932 , wich cross references wix 57035 , around 11-15 bucks depending where u buy. You can cross reference at www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup

Get the engine code or remove the filter and take it to an auto parts store like AutoZone or orrielly's and they cross reference the filter and tell you oil capacity.

Yep, it's usually around 1.25qts, but don't fill it more than half way between the full and add marks on the dipstick.

Be careful on vertical shaft V-twins that you don't over-fill them.

You'll get CLOUDS of smoke on start-up, or on inclines. Because of the orientation of the sump to the jugs on these engines, oil can easily get drawn up the breather tube and sucked into the carburetor.

Some more sensitive OHV vert. shaft engines need to have the oil level maintained more towards the "add" line to prevent the clouds.

No engine book except the book containing a parts breakdown for the entire machine including the engine. There was no referrance to oil capacity or filter number, but something less than 2 qts will do it. Thanks for the info.
