So, according to the first report, SAE 20 can be used if it is sufficiently friction-modified.

and that seems to be where we are going today, at least Ford, Honda, Mazda

Right. And the zinc additive is I believe Zinc dialkyl-dithiocarbamate, or ZDTC.

With the right amount of ZDDP, ZDTC, and MoDTC, a 20 weight Group II+ or Group III oil has sufficient protection for the newer daily drivers.
