It's extremely bad for any engine! If the engine's in good shape, it could take a few years for the oil level to get that low.
 
A friend of mine has a 96 psd. I helped him with a top end overhaul at 425k. He was given a set of new heads, and injectors from his boss after the last ofthe 96s were liquidated. The cylinders showed no signs of wear. And crosshaxing was as vived as fresh. That was close to five years ago. Mine has 205k on the clock. It wasnt fully seated til about 125k.
