Hello,

I have a 1995 Jaguar XJ6 with 132K miles and I need to change the rear differential lube, the owners book says to only use Shell Spirax 90 weight, I did a search for straight 90 weight oils and Redline synthetic 90 weight manual transmission oil came up, so if anyone thinks it would be OK or not to use the Redline please reply.

you would want a gl-5 oil in a differential not a transmission oil.

just use 80w90 conventional gl-5

I use LE 1605 Duolec in my rear differentials. It's SAE 110, but would have been classified SAE 90 back in 1995. You can buy it by the quart at Mag-Hytec.com.

If you want something else that is rated SAE 90 by today's standards, then you should look at Motul PA90 or a Bel-Ray gear oil.

Good luck.

Wherever I have worked, we put 80w90 GL-5 in every situation where SAE90 GL-5 was specified and never had a problem.

D you have a limited slip differential? If that is the case, be sure that the 80w90 GL-5 has the additive included or buy the additive separately.

I have Valvoline because it is not expensive, can be bought by the gallon, and already has Limited Slip additives in it.
