hi everyone. i wanna start using 5w-40 synthetic for my honda civic lx with 252k switching from 10w-40 over winter months, for better protection and wanna know if castrol synthec is good or maybe mobil 1 5w-40. i would use redline over this those two, but red line is bit pricey for my budget. what would be really good synthetic oil after red line in range 5w-40 for the price and quality? any answer/opinion is welcome. thanks....

They're all good enough for your Honda - I would let price be my guide (you can see I've done just that)...

Cheers,

What year Civic?

Anyway, most of the oils are massive overkill for the D series that ran from... maybe early 90's until 2005. Are there any mods? Is there really cold weather in LA in the winter?

How about Rotella 5-40?

What's your current OCI? Are you planning to double it when you switch to synthetic? If not, why spend money on synthetic? If you're worried about winter months, start using any good mineral 5w-30 and call it a day. I have a feeling anything Xw-40 is overkill for your engine unless it's heavily modified, which you should have mentioned.

Mobil 1 has a 5w40? I think if you really feel that a thicker oil will protect better than I would use Mobil 1 0w40. I really think a 5w30 would be absolutely fine for you. The thicker the oil the more heat retained by the lube therefore the engine can run hotter. I would forget "synthetic" and just use a good conventional. Any major brand or auto store brand would be fine. OR...you could just keep doin what you have been doing. 252k is quite a ways.

Shell Rotella T is the best (in my opinion) 5w-40 oil.

It is called "M1 TDT"
It is approved for gasoline and diesel engines.

There is also M1 Formula M 5w-40, but I've only seen it at some car dealerships/service shops.

Oh, I wasn't recommending it to the OP. I already provided my recommendation earlier. I was just responding to the poster who did not know that M1 5w-40 existed.

You've done well to get your car to 252k.
Only suggestion I would make is to switch to a High-Mileage oil. They typically have higher zddp content than SN oils, and Mobil's M1 HM has a good reputation on this board for reducing oil consumption.

A 5W-40 won't provide "more protection" over a 5W-30 for the OP's Civic. You're just supporting a myth.

But, but, the engine runs quieter when the 5w-40 is in there. The must mean it likes it more!

Good advice. The M1 5w30 is a bit thicker than your garden variety 5w30 as well IIRC.
