BLACKSTONE'S COMMENTS ON MY 2003 HYUNDAI SONATA 2.7L V6: [My comments in square brackets]
RAY H: Another nice improvement in wear. If these metals get any lower, we'll be looking at virgin oil! This oil was run 3,000 miles, but it could have run much longer, considering the low wear your Hyundai is producing. The oil was in good shape physically, containing no moisture, fuel, or coolant. The viscosity was mildly low, but since it's not being caused by a contaminant, it's okay. Insolubles (oil oxidation due to heat, use and blow-by) were normal at 0.3%, showing good oil filtration and complete combustion. Great engine! Try 4,500 miles next time.
[Though the oil was only in use 3,000 miles, the time duration was nearly 9 months. I labled it "Mystery" oil because the only similarity between all five quarts was the 10W-30 viscosity range. The content consisted of bottles (capped) and partial bottles discovered in one of my all too rare periods of obsessive compulsive garage cleaning attacks. The criteria for use was five-fold: If the contents neither left me gasping for breath, caused skin eruptions, showed observable nasties in the bottom of the bottle, demonstrated threatening or obscene gestures, nor burst into flame upon exposure to air, in it went. API service categories ranged from SH - SL. As usual, any and all comments invited, regardless how stupid or irrelevant...

18k miles in three years. glad your not changing every 3 months. 3k oci based on mileage not on time looks perfect for your situation. UOA looks good.

Got my first load of TropArtic SM synthetic blend 10W-30 in the sump, now with an oversize Castrol (WIX) oil filter. I'll run that through, and then another to establish a baseline before I post my next UOA. Thanks for the responses - I realize this is a mundane engine, driven mundanely, and using mundane motor oil, but still nice to know it's settling in nicely. The brew sure sheared back, though, didn't it?

Oh well, at least it's not needed anything done to it..

Nice UOA Ray!

Take care, Bill

Gee..I'll only have to wait 18 months to see how the TropArtic SM synthetic blend 10W-30 holds up.

Thanks for the witch's-brew post.

Wouldn't it be nice if just ONE of the others who've jumped on the T/A syn-blend bandwagon and who pile miles faster than I would post his results, huh?

Hee-hee - I'm not. This was a one-time and reckless foray into the forbidden dark arts of alchemy and tribology. ("Da' debil made me do it..." -Flip Wilson)

I've often wondered if I should do a similar mystery mix with all the odds and sods I've got in my oil cellar, but what car would I put it in? Certainly not mine!

I always thought those blends were for the beater or wife's vehicle, in that order, depending on which one you have.

just goes to show change oil offten to remove gunk and the grade and type does not matter much keep it clean and dry and changed out and you will do as good/better than just about any syn at 10K -12K range and at a lower cost IMHO.

No, Crisco cooking oil is for that.
