I've seen many around several automotive forums, including here, claiming that additives that have primarily naphtha in them help clean carbon deposits. Most notably Seafoam has peaked my interest that several claim to work, it's almost a cult following for those who use it. However, looking at the chemistry there is no reason beyond the IPA in it why it would clean anything. What is it in these naphtha laced products that makes people think they work?

I'd agree they don't clean any better than IPA or Naptha and often times they probably don't clean anything at all.

People buy all sorts of useless things, it isn't limited to automotive fluid additives.

Used Seafoam once in the fuel years ago. After using PEA cleaners in my 5.4L 3V and not breaking any of the plugs there's no question in my mind what works.
