Chevy Duramax recommendation

With my LBZ, I follow the OLM (Oil Life Monitor) and get between 9-10k miles before an OCI is required. If I followed a UOA regimen, I could most likely extend the mileage duration even further.

All the Dmax UOAs show 7.5k - 10k miles as doable, situationally dependent of course.

The only one that would make me a bit "iffy" is the LMM with it's post combustion regen injection, where the fuel may thin the oil, but even then the OLM tends to send a warning for shorter OCIs. That typically will not affect the guys that get up to temp and stay there, but the "short hop" drivers with no load can often see a lot of regen cycles.

The OLMs have been reasonably reliable in the Dmax trucks. Unfortunately for some of us, the OLM sneaks up on us because a small portion of trucks don't have the DIC controls on the steering wheel (mine is a W/T truck). I have no idea where the OLM is at until I get the 10% message.

Brettm1388, you cal tell your buddy that 5k miles is easily doable, and will probably under-utilize the oil. He's selected a very reputable oil that has shown outstanding capability. The LBZ is know as one of the best wearing engines. Have him run the 5k miles and then sample; he'll be impressed.

I don't know if I'd go 10k on an LMM. LLY or LBZ I would without worry.

Driving habits would highly affect the outcome as stated already. It's important to get the engine to full operational temp after regen

Delo is a nice product I would have went Delvac 1300 though

Thanks @dnewton3
He ordered the blackstone kit yesterday and will be doing a UOA probably at the end of January or February so, I'll be sure to post the report.

@smokefan1977
his is a LBZ so no regen on his truck, just the occasional hard driving that could count as a regen lol

Here is a link to my recent UOA; I doubt anyone could purposely be any harder on the oil than I was.

Here's a couple where the use of syn's can go WAY past the 5k mile mark (could probably go 20k miles or perhaps more):

Get his UOA at 5k miles for peace of mind, and then extend a little bit at a time as he feels comfortable. 5k miles OCIs is a total waste in a Dmax; evidence points to no other conclusion. If one uses syn's, then the OCI can be pushed much further (and should be to get the ROI). UOAs are an absolute must if extending the OCI past the OLM.

We welcome him, and you, to the world of today's lubes. They are not your father's oils of yesteryear.

I know that GM uses Mobil 1 for their synthetic apps...so i assume that Delvac is defintiely the FF when it comes to diesel apps....I would go with the one you cna get the best price or rebates on that is 15w40 or just stick with Delvac and stock up when sales come around.

"Brettm1388" the duramax will do just fine on any CJ-4 oil. I ran a UOA on a run of rotella 15w40 last summer under HARD use, with a computer tuner and all, and blackstone labs commented that I could have gone much longer than 9,000 miles considering the active TBN left in the oil. I am running the T6 rotella now, and am aiming for a once a year interval. These engines last forever!
