One might counter my statement by asking:
How come US truck engines like Cummins, Cat, Int'l and even Detroit (designed partially by MB) don't have ultra long OCI recommendations (DD15 and 16 are 50Kmi) and/or concomitant recommendation for synthetics. My answer is: US EPA 2007/2010 regs are more stringent on NOx and less stringent on particulates than Euro 5 and 6 (latter due to go into effect 2013), thus forcing an EGR dependency which reduces NOx of course but also increases particulates. And is quite damaging to the oil.
If modern US HD OTR truck engines were regulated by Euro emission specs, we would see OCIs into the 6 figures and a simultaneous necessity for synthetics.
