Hi -

I'm doing the head gasket in my 4Runner. I've gotten to the point where I need to remove the head bolts. The manual says to use a 10mm "bi-hexagon" wrench to accomplish this.

I did some research and found that this is also referred to as a triple square, and that Napa sells these tools. So, I go to Napa, pick one up and bring it home. It's too small!

So, my question is, am I right in thinking that these head bolts are "triple square" and that Toyota just has a misprint in their repair manual, or does bi-hexagon refer to something else that I need to be looking for?

Hexagons have different included angles (120 degrees) than squares (which are 90 degrees), so while both are 12 point...they are definitely not the same...

You need a bi-hexagon 12 point...not triple square...if I remember 7th grade geometry correctly...

I just went to their page and searched for "toyota head" and those were what came up. Kind of lame they couldn't use something more common even a torx or allen head type would at least be easier to find.

That's good to know on two counts: 1. I remember it right...and 2. that it applies to fastener specification...

Good luck with the HG...they are a royal PITA on the 3.0 V-6 in my '90 4-Runner...

Thanks!

I'm so close. Just 16 head bolts stand in my way at this point. Now I have to wait to get this tool.

The UPS man came through today. Heads are off.

Here is the SnapOn tool.
