So I asked a question a couple weeks ago about oil for my friends Contour, turns out it is an Escort 2.0 with 144K. Original SAE grade was 5w20 but that seems to thin. What weight and brand do you guys think? Thanks

Motorcraft Blend 5w20.....just like the manufacturer recommends.....and the correct Motorcraft filter...OCI 5000 +/-

OR....better yet Mobil 1 5w20 or 0w20....with a PureOne filter....OCI 7,500 +/-.

THIN.....IS IN!

You really think 5w20 or 0w20 is OK? I always heard when engines got older and higher miles to start going thicker

Repete.....Thin is in.....you'll be OK with a 20 weight oil.

If it uses or burns oil....a HM 5w30 would be OK....but only if it is using a signifigant amount of oil over the OCI period.

0W20 has been fine for our 1994 commuter Escort for the past 300,000 miles...... and still counting. No wear, noise, oil consumption yet, so why use anything else??

And, easy starts in the winter..... not much of a selling point today though. 97f, all week!

I believe the the 1997 model year Escort & Contour both recommended 5W-30, as 5W-20 didn't exist in 1997, other than the original Mobil 1 5W-20, something Ford never spec'd for. Since Ford was slow to spec this engine to 5W-20 I just kept using 5W-30 graded oil. It runs great on this oil and gets 36 mpg on long trips. Locally I get 27 mpg using 5W-30. How much will I gain using 5W-20, probably not much. I'll just stick with what Ford recommened originally.

My 2002 F-150 & the wife's 2005 Explorer 4.6 spec 5W-20 oil which is used in both vehicles.

Whimsey

When we owned a 98 Escort Wagon I always used Valvoline 5w30 conventional. With a Motorcraft filter. I hate the filter location on that car. Equally tough to get to whether its from the top or the bottom.
The car is spec'd for 5w30. That was one of the best vehicles we ever owned. Wish we still had it.

One of my sons have an '97, and as correctly stated above in '97 Ford recommended 5w-30. When Ford was switching to 5w-20 they eventually backed-speced several models/engines, including your '97 Escort.

The one we have currently has about 180,000mi., I bought it used in '05 with 90,000mi. It has had nothing but Motorcraft 5w-20 since we've owned it, regular maintainence plus an alternator is all it has needed.
