The FL-2005 is phased out in favor of the FL 400S Motor Craft filters.
Two observations: The Fl 400S is shorter, and has a drain back valve at the BACK of the filter.
My car 99" Escort Zx2 2.0 DOHC with the horizontal mounted filter. The parts out kids tell me this is the NOW spec'ed filter.
I'm skeptical here????
Whats the verdict? Will the drain back valve in a different locating be an issue?
Thanks,
Dusty

The by-pass pressure of 16psi vs 8-11psi has me concerned.. The 2005 was a darn good filter especially for the price.

Will the FL-400s work just fine for you? Yeah, I'd bet on it.

I believe that was designed for turbos to keep the oil from being siphoned from the filter as the turbine spools down after engine shutdown.

What about the RP oil filter 20-400? The filter looks amazing by the tests run by another member that drives a tundra. It had the 2nd highest particle count for 15microns and less.

This has been the case for about 3 years now. O haven't seen a FL-2005 for about that long. When you look up applications for them the part shows obsolete and replaced by the FL-400S.

The current FL-400S is smaller than the old one which was the same outside size as the FL-2005.

Will the drain back valve in a different location cause problems and the different bypass pressures cause problems on my car? It looks like RP oil filters are also of 400S design...
Thanks,
Dusty

The FL400S is the correct filter for that engine now. I just sold a 2000 ZX2 with the 2.0 Zetec motor. It was my Dad's and I had it a couple of years. I used that Motorcraft filter for 36K miles with NO problems at all. No startup noise or anything else. Use it with confidence!

Are you sure you don't mean the bypass valve?

River,
Yes that is what I meant to say. Does the location make a difference?

My 1996 Zetec Contour originally took the Motorcraft FL200S, sad to say it's been discontinued. They now spec the FL300, with a nitrile ADBV. That's a step down for me. They are not stocked at WallyWorld and cost a fortune at auto parts dealers. Now I use Napa Gold, PureOne and Mobil 1, all with silicone ADBV at a lower cost than the nitrile FL300.

I believe the FL2005 was used on the Zetec motors when they added the variable "something" to the engine that was controlled by the oil pressure.

Not if Ford doesn't care. If they spec'ed that new filter number for your car, I wouldn't worry about it.

If so, then it was balanced on the razor's edge of failure by design. If they spec a 400, then use the 400. MC are good filters.

I have VVT on my Toyota truck and use whatever I like for brands. I use anywhere between 0W20 and 5W30 oil, too.

I think you'll be alright. If it fails, it was ready to go anyway.

You're long out of warranty, what does Ford care. The FL2005 had a 2 stage ADBV? Not sure but it was different than a "standard" oil filter construction.
