REPORT

Volvo 2.4L Turbo 5-cylMAKE/MODEL:

OIL TYPE & GRADE: Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5W/40

Gasoline (Unleaded)FUEL TYPE:

OIL USE INTERVAL: 7,848 Miles

COMMENTS: Amended report. This first sample from the 2.4L

turbo in your V70XC looks pretty good. Universal averages

show typical wear levels for this type of engine after about

4,800 miles on the oil. Iron was just a little higher than

average, but this oil was in use 7,848 miles, so this level

really isn't cautionary. No fuel or coolant was found and

the viscosity was normal for 5W/40. Low insolubles and

silicon show good oil and air filtration. The TBN was 1.2

showing a little active additive left; less than 1.0 is too

low for extended use. Try going 9,500 miles on the oil run.

Relatively happy with this report, viscosity held up well, but slightly higher wear metals were a surprise. Car is a Daily Driver, so sees lots of city miles and idling in the heat...with the TBN at 1.2, I will stick with the factory OCI of 7,500 miles/12 months.

It certainly looks good to me. With TBN of 1.2 (with a qt of makeup oil), a recommendation to extend the OCI to >9K seems, well, odd...

I'm curious though, why this stuff in the XC70 if you're using M10W40 in the T5? I know the M1 is readily available (on sale!). Isn't this stuff really hard to get--and expensive? Not judging, mind you--just wondering?

Curiosity is my only answer - I've managed to get the M1 0W40 on sale (and, in fact, got a GREAT deal on some M1 5W40 TDT). You're right, this stuff is hard to find and relatively expensive...I just wanted to try it out...the XC has PU 5W40 in it again...and I will do another UOA after this run.

But clearly, I can't run this oil any farther than M1...the car with the M1 had a long (3K) highway trip...so perhaps the M1 would have had the lower TBN of the PU had it been subjected to the same use...

Curious what you paid for the Pennz Ultra Euro 5W40.

I found it in one place in Ottawa and was quoted $17.00/liter and almost fell off my chair!

It was about $50/6 Qts including shipping...pretty steep, but I got a really cool Ferrari hat with each order ...It may have been that hat that really drew me in...

I will also say that I got a peek into the crankcase during the last oil change (I had to replace the oil cooler o-rings). That crankcase looks new - not even any varnish. Now, I have never seen it before, so I can't tell you if it's the PU or previous synthetics I have used. I have owned the car for 3 years and 50K miles, so PO maintenance and previous engine condition are unknown. Volvos have a screen on the oil fill that blocks the view of the cam galleries...

Clean as a whistle at 142,000 miles - very happy about that.

Cheers,
Astro

The report looks good. It thicken up from 13.1 to 14.1 @ 100c at the end of the OCI.
