Honda Harmony 215 Lawn Mower

GX series have steel cylinder liner. GC is aluminum, though I have yet to see any of the 3 I know show signs of wear. GX may have better bearings??? GX is basically the commercial version of the GC.

You'd think the rubber (or whatever material it is) timing belt would be more of an issue, but in years of following this stuff, I've never heard of anyone having issues with the GC series aside from carb/fuel related. I believe that belt is in direct contact with the engine oil all the time, especially on the vertical shaft versions, where the belt is the facing down.

look at that! compact package. short skirt piston (for OPE). is that a vacuum driven fuel pump? The older briggs and tec's always had same/close to same bearing dia as the shaft. looks like a sleeve bearing on the crank, but with a wider dia bearing surface.

btw-- the operating rpm IIRC, for the GC engine in my eu2000i is 2400rpm light load to 4400rpm full load. that's pretty quick for ope. I recall old school tec's at WOT/no load wouldn't spin past about that... the timing wasn't there. I know the robyn-subaru engines have a 2-stage timing "advance" - wonder if honda does too.

For the transmission, there are two cables, one for the gear shift and one for the engagement of the transmission. There is a small plastic lever that engages the drive. Flip the mower over and have someone engage the drive, you should see the lever move. Also, check to make sure that the cable is just not out of adjustment and needs to be tightened.

Yes, exactly! I had the mower on two saw horsed while I layed on the ground looking up under the mower deck(blade, gear box etc.)The small plastic lever/arm on the gear box(looking from underneath) will not move even with my hand. I sprayed it with some Kroil.

Do I have to pull up the engagement lever at the handle bars first?
This cable is in great shape(connected to the plastic arm @ gear box). I see no adjustment on that cable but, the plastic lever doesn't move anyway!

I own the older Honda mowers with aluminum or commercial series with steel decks, but I just tuned up my dads Harmony so I have some experience with it now as well. I like keeping the old stuff running... the older the better!

From what I remember on my dad's Harmony, it was very easy to move. I think that there are a few bolts that can be removed to take the plastic panel under the deck that covers the transmission so that you can have better access.

The lever is number 5:

I think that the adjustment screw is on the bottom of the plastic handlebar cover which is number 4:

This might not be your exact model, but they are all very similar with slight variations:

Thank you!
Once again, another member with good information.
Yeah, these pictures(exploded views) are pretty close to what
I have. I think they will help.

I want to thank everyone for the information that you all provided. Please keep it comming if you don't mind. I'll take any/all I can get. As soon as it stops raining here, I'll be doing something with the mower unless someone offers me a price I can't refuse.

Trying not to get attached to the mower but it's hard due to it being such a nice piece of equipment. Really is!

I have a hobby of looking through craigslist to find the really old Honda mowers, reviving them, and selling them or giving away as gifts. I think I have given away or sold 5 or 6 already and they will last the next guy at least another 10 years with good care.

I have kept one for my self and use it twice a week right now. I think that it was made in 1989 and was used commercially most of the time.

I have discovered that my Honda HRB 215 has leaking oil pan gasket. It is very minor but is there a way to fix it?

This is a link to the cylinder and shows the oil pan gasket which is under $4 but will require a little bit of work.
I don't have a Harmony at the moment but I can check to see what needs to come off for proper access.

Mine is the one with the clutch (aren't they all with the clutch?) and now I am worried that even though the leak is small (i.e. no drip on the floor), it might seep in the clutch mechanism. This is the second clutch. I have no idea why I lost the first one as there was no leak at that time. It costs me lots of money to have that one fixed as the shop was incompetent.

If you know what needs to come off, it will be great help. I think Honda never created an electronic shop manual for these lawn mowers. I have searched and searched but only found expensive paper copies on the net.
