I have taken over maintenance on a 2007 Mercury Milan. It has some warranty coverage left so I would like to stick to approved oils. The manual states WSS-M2C930-A oils are to be used. There are several oils that meet this approval, but is there a way to know of this approval has been superseded or replaced? Some oils are WSS-M2C930-A and some are WSS-M2C946-A. What is the difference? This is my first voyage into Ford approvals.

It appears that the WSS-M2C930-A is the 5w20 oil spec that meets the Ford oil spec.

The WSS-M2C946-A spec is for the 5w30 oil spec that meets the Ford oil spec.

It also appears that WSS-M2C945-A replaces/supersedes the WSS-M2C930-A 5w20 spec.

linkable sources for your data?

The WSS-M2C-930-A spec is for the last generation API SM/GF-4 5W20 motor oil. The new API SN/GF-5 5W20 motor oil now specs WSS-M2C945-A under Ford's nomenclature. All Ford did was change a couple of numbers to reflect the API SM-to-SN transition.

Ditto re: 5W30 with a Ford spec change from 929 (old) to 946 (new).

The re-spec'd oils are 'back compatible' per API standard.

As for linkable sources, surf away...check Ford's Engineering Material Specifications data.

Thanks.
