I have just acquired this outboard, and need some oil advice.

it is a 2006, fuel injected Yamaha 90 hp 4 stroke with 213 hours.

I have no idea what Yamaha recommends for this model.

What viscosity should I use?

Synthetic or Dino?

Regular automotice, HDEO or Marine specific oil?

Does anyone know if the oil filter for this outboard cross references with anything that can be purchased from auto parts stores, or am I stuck with the Yamaha dealer for that?

You should research your engine and see if there is anything special about it that might require something special for lubrication.

If it were mine, I'd give it a full synthetic 0w30, 0w40, 5w40, 10w40 HDEO, motorcycle, or automotive oil. I'd also make an effort to change it, along with gear oil, ever season or every 100hrs, whichever came 1st. And, top it off before every start until you have logged oil consumption. Use Stabil Marine or equivalent with EVERY fill up.

I would use a NMMA rated full sythetic oil. They pass testing for corrosion on steel test plates.

Except in real life all the commercial maritime companies who were my employers clients used HDEOs of the proper viscosity in their gasoline and high speed diesel engines. You don't need syn oil" unless you sell Amsoil" and in a marine engine frequent oil changes are a good idea and HDEO dino oils due to their reasonable price make the changes easy on the pocket book.

I ended up going with Yamalube 10W30 and Yamaha filter from the dealer, but only to buy me some time to consider what to use next.

Yamalube is simply too expensive - $8+ a liter for dino is just ridiculous!

The filter is expensive too.

Are there any filters from Purolator or others that fit Yamaha outboards?

The filter that fit my car, also fit my outboard when I had a Honda outboard, but I am not sure about Yamaha. Is this a "marinized" motorcycle engine?

Not only will the Honda outboard filter #'s (cycle filter CH 6017A) fit your Yamaha, but any auto filter that fits a Honda Civic will work too.
CH 6017A
PH 7317
PH 6607
PH 3593A

That's assuming you have room for the larger filters.

I agree..my dad just purchased a new 4 stroke jet outboard. He also purchased an oil change kit for the first oil change. I almost fell over when I saw the price...$37.99 for 3 quarts of Yamalube 10W-30 and filter! I think we'll probably go with Amsoil for subsequent changes.

Thanks dwendt44 - really appreciate the feedback about the filter!

I think the term "marine engines" is a bit too wide.
Except corrosion resistance, you should consider other things too. 2T outboards, 4T outboards, diesels (regular, turbo/supercharged), gas inboards (lo rpm, hi rpm, modern alloy heads, etc) presents some variables other than "marine".
I know that the hdeo 15w40 is a good choice for diesels and regular inboards but I am not so sure if that's a good recommendation for outboards or hi-rpm inboards.
Note, not sure, because I don't know so much about 4T outboards but they seem to call for 10w30 synth as std. What does that mean, how are they designed? Temp, surfaces, rpm, lubrication methods etc.

Yes HDEO covers all is kind of lame......Not way the it can be best for gas engined outboards. If it's rated as a fleet oil it's a compromise for a gas engine or even as a stretch an outboard gas engine.
Marine oil is the best for a 4 stroke outboard. I stand by that.

I'm on my 5th season with Rotella dino 15w-40 in a Yamaha F75 (same engine) on a pontoon boat. Changed annually, seems to be doing great.

Plenty of commonly available filters to use. I'd have to go look, but I believe the Purolator I'm using now is PL14612.

I run 5w-40 synthetic HDEO in my four stroke outboards. Right now the current flavor is M1 turbo diesel truck and a purolator filter.

I suspect it'll last forever, and it costs much less than the OEM dino oils you all are quoting prices for.

I know you already bought Yamalube and a Yamaha filter as I saw a post from you later in the thread. However, I will answer your original post.

1 - I personally would only use an FC-W rated marine 4-stroke specific oil. I would not use regular automotive oil or even diesel oil. While they certainly can be used marine oil has special additives to help with corrosion and fuel dillution those other oils do not. If you will use the engine in saltwater you definitely want to use a marine specific oil with the FC-W rating. IMHOA.

Use the conventional or synthetic of your choice but again, IMO, use an FC-W rated marine specific oil. Amsoil offers a full synthetic FC-W rated marine 4-stroke oil for a reasonable cost( $9.75 p/qt USD ). Most conventional marine oils like Pennzoil or the dealer stuff will run you at least $8-$9. Almost doesn't make sense not to buy the Amsoil unless shipping fees and/or time constraints make it impractical.

2 - Your engine can run 10W-30 or 10W-40. The manual spec's both. Here is a PDF for the 2006+ F90( might be the link the other guy gave earlier - if so sorry for the double post )...

http://www.yamaha-motor.com/assets/service/manuals/1/LIT-18626-07-12_1406.pdf

3 - Your engine takes the same filter my 40HP 4-stroke Merc does from what I can tell. To get you the most accurate list of aftermarket filters if you could post the Yamaha # off the filter you got I can make sure my list is 100% accurate. From what I can tell you have the same filter as I do though and these are the cross reference and application listings from these mfg's.

The filter is a M20 X 1.5. These filters have some slight variances in dimensions but they should all fit as the #'s cross. Also, FWIW you can ask for the filter to fit a 2010 Nissan Altima with the 2.5L L4 and you will( should )get most of these filter #'s.

Exactly why.
