Man crushed by car in garage dies in hospital

" A 20-year-old man in west Toronto has died after the car he was working on collapsed on him in his garage."

I wonder what went wrong that lead to the loss of life of a young man.

Anyway, i think it's a noteworthy reminder to everyone who ventures underneath their vehicle to be extremely careful, taking all necessary precautionary measures to prevent its collapse.

We can only surmise what happened to cause death to this young man.

The use of at least 2 Jack Stands, allowing for adequate support of a vehicles weight, is a must if work is performed under a vehicle. There are no shortcuts in safety. I too, see many people under a car with just the support of a jack and milk crates as jack stands. Accidents do happen but safety and security must be paramount before actual work is performed.

May he rest in peace.

Someday I'd like to build a sunken bay in a new detached garage. Anyway, just thinking about this gives me the willies...

I can't open the link for some reason, but the thought is creepy. When I change the Transfer Case Fluid in my Evo I have to be like totally under the car, and even with Jack stands and sissor/hydrolic jacks as back ups it STILL freaks me out.

Geez, I hate to hear about this type of thing. Just last weekend I found a crack in my 10 yo Rhino Ramps, so I'm going to toss them and upgrade to the 12000 lb variety.

Here's a thought.....Toss them in such a way that no one can use them again if you can.

Yes! Best post in this thread, if you ask me.

I just bought some of the 12000 Rhinos. I know they're a good product, but it still bothers me trusting plastic that much. I should start putting jack stands under there as well...

Where would you put the jack stands when your car is on the ramps? The ramp sticks out behind the wheel, which is typically where the jack stand would go to grab the frame, right? It bothers me too, and if there was a good place for the JS, I would prolly do it.

I agree, best post. I just went out and grabbed them out of the dumpster and cut them in half with a cut-off saw, ain't nobody gonna use them now

I still look back to college and replacing the alternator on my 1989 Mazda MX-6. The jack was the "jack stand" back then, and I had some old cinder blocks under there just in case, knowing full well they would turn to powder if it fell. Guess I still have things to do in life......

I put them under the lower control arm bracket on my car. Apparently it is very strong, just don't forget the remove them. I did that once, but it held up very well and just had a little minor dent.

Been awhile since I used the ramps, but I think I may be able to slip them under the reinforced flat part of the frame just inside the pinch welds. Could be wrong. Failing that, I guess they have to go under the A-arms (which I know isn't ideal). Forgetting to remove them could really ruin my day though...

Sad thing is, most of them are all made in China like everything these days.

How Sad.

Almost happened to me when I was 20.....young and stupid. My GF had a 91 Escort and I was changing the oil for her. STUPID ME used the car's scissors jack on the right side to jack it up. STUPID ME climbed under there to change the filter and drain the oil.

I was positioning the drain pan, when I caught motion out of the corner of my eye. I bolted out from under the car and a split second later, the jack tipped to the side and the car slammed down. Literally tenths of a second after I cleared out.

I would have been squished. No doubt about it.

If there is a young teenager reading this....please do not do what I did. Use proper jack stands, ramps, wheel chocks, etc.

I will put the wheel under the car if i have the car up on jack stands for extra protection. At least if it falls, it won't fall all the way down.

Meanwhile, another ambulance responding to the same call was involved in a head-on crash with a Honda Civic at Eglinton Avenue West and Royal York Road. The ambulance had its sirens on at the time of the crash, police said.

The people inside both vehicles suffered minor injuries.

Police are investigating both incidents.

Currently, i am performing some work on a Nissan Quest van, and while underneath it over the past few days, the thought of something going wrong had crossed my mind a few times. I had supported it on jack stands, while also keeping a wheel on the side from where it was removed. I pulled out the jack because it was getting in my way.

Today, i put an additional jack stand on the side which has the wheel removed.
