In the past, I've always topped off my power steering fluid reservoir with power steering fluid. I was going to change the fluid, and both of my cars, a Ford and a Nissan, call for auto transmission fluid. What happens when these fluids mix? How common is ATF in the power steering system?

Most of the time the mixing is usually PSF added in a ATF system as oppose to the other way. From what I have experience it will produce a very black fluid in the reservoir. Other than that I haven't seen huge complications.

Many Imports are ATF.
Chrysler started using ATF+4 in power steering around 04 I think.
Ford of course type F then switched to Mercon V.
German cars use something alittle more specific.

ATF is common in PS systems.

I've never had a problem with a PSF/ATF mix. But, I don't purposely mix them.

If you require ATF in your PS system, use it.
If you require PSF in your PS system, use it.
