wow, funny thing is I had a 2 inch gash right on the corner of a tire, where the sidewall and tread meet, repaired and drove home from Vegas in 100+degree heat.

stupid I know but it was temporary
 
I've used wood screws with silicon on the thread to plug a hole in a tire before but it doesn't work on a sidewall. Lasts forever in the tread though if done right. I wore out a tire that was plugged that way once. Used it until it was bald and that screw was still in there.

If you were coming back on a Sunday evening I can believe that. The average speed for that stretch of I-15 is about 2 mph most of the way.
