Can you put grease on the strut mount bearings?

I was curious if anyone has put grease on the front strut mount bearings or do they have to stay dry? The bearing between the upper spring seat and the strut mount. It would seem that if I replaced the rubber boot and it covers the whole rod area and seals off the spring seat too, you could grease this bearing without having it exposed to the environment. Hmmmm

struts/shocks are designed to be self-lubricating. DO not introduce any foreign grease/lubricant that may get into the oil and upset it's chemical composition.

Try keeping your strut/shock shaft dirt-free is the only way to go.

I'm not talking about the rod, I'm talking about that round bearing that sits between the upper spring seat and the upper strut mount. Here is a picture of the bearing: http://www.rockauto.com/ref/KYB/Detail.html?sm5110.jpg

Hey Blazer,

How did those bearings fail? Did they just wear out or were they physically damaged during use?

Just more or less ground themselves to dust.

No lubrication whatsover and seeing they are in the wheel well, they got exposed a lot of grime and salt.

Grease them.

At about 225k, I replaced the front strut cartridges on my 88 BMW 528e. At that time, I re-packed the upper bearings with wheel bearing grease. MY wife's 86 needs the same treatment. I've been lubing them with white spray lube as a band aid.

Yes, grease them. They are (should be?) at least very lightly oiled/greased from the factory. They won't fail nearly as quickly as wheel bearings, but they still need lubrication.

I re-greased an old set of strut top bearings when I swapped in my new KONIs. I washed out the old grease and grim by soaking overnight in Simple Green.

After sufficiently cleaning it out such that no grit was felt, and it was completely dry, I packed the bearings with Redline's CV-2 grease.

As good as new.
