I read something about this in a motorcycle forum a while back and i was wondering if anyone here knew any details if this is true.

I just looked at the PDS and the pour point was -42C. I think the last time I looked it was around -56C.

Hate to sound completely ignorant, (tho when it comes to oil i am) but what does that mean?

PDS = product datasheet. It's the technical paper that gives all the specifications.

Pour point is just a measure of how cold it can be and the oil still pours. I never pay much attention, though a different pour point does mean they probably changed something.

I don’t have the Product Data Sheet form from 3 years ago and older formulations but it looked like the one from a year or so ago except the viscosity at 100C was around 20 cSt. The Pour Point was about -51C and the Flash Point was about 270C just like it was listed in the PDS from about a year ago. Again I’m going from memory as I don’t have a copy of the PDS from several years ago. Older VOAs and UOAs including the AMSOIL test report data support these values. Then a year or two ago the PDS below came out. The notable change from previous is the viscosity at 100C went from about 20 cSt to 17.7 cSt. Perhaps it was a misprint, I don’t know. The table will not paste in properly. The first value is Racing 4T, 10W40 and the second is Vtwin 20W50.

Pumping, cP 11500 @ -30°C 8500 @ -20°C
Viscosity Index 164 150

The latest PDS is on the M1 web site and shows a number differences. Viscosity back up to 20.8, different Pour Point and Flash Points, etc. While it may not be important in practical use, the changes in pour and flash may indicate a change in base maybe a lower % of PAO. For the 20W50 Pour Point went from -51C to -42C. Flash Point went from 270C to 214C. But also note the Flash Point test criteria went from ASTM D92 to ASTM D93. So someone with access to and understanding of those tests can elaborate.

I always thought those specs were suspect. I put M1 in my chest freezer at -10F and,,,,,, wait,,,,, wait,,,,, It won't pour. Well, eventually it will, but I suspect by that time, it's warmed up 10 or 20 degrees.

I'd like to see someone riding their motorcycle at -42*

Specs have changed. Has the oil changed?

Flash point much lower.
VI for 20w50 lower
20w50 thicker.
