0W-20 RLI, 2,500mi. Maybach 57s AMG

2007 Maybach 57s AMG delivered 6/2007 with 125 miles on the odometer. The car comes with a twin turbo 6.0 liter V12 (my old “regular” Maybach 57 had a 5.5 liter V12). It has 612 BHP and 738 ft lbs torque. Driving: spirited around town, some highway driving, maybe 10 percent.

The regular Maybach 57 did spec. several 30 but mostly 40 grade oils. This engine only specs. all 40 grade oils. Note that the smaller engine was rev limited to 150 MPH whereas the AMG engine allows for 175 MPH. This is a big difference in oil heating in my book. Since I will have no opportunity to go over 100 MPH there are no reasons to go with the 40 grade oil.

Oct/2010 Update:
In May of this year we had around 15,000 miles on the car and it was a year since the previous oil change. The tires were getting changed (again) for a forth set and I went ahead and changed the oil. There was no UOA on that one. We then went on a road trip of around 1,200 miles. The other 1,300 miles was strictly around town since then and you can see the engine did not get hot enough to burn off any fuel. The car has 17,500 miles on it and the oil has 2,500. I took a sample but did not change the oil this time around:

No worries, the oil can certainly last a full 5,000 miles but he recommended a change just because of the high fuel content. The flash point was low. But wear is sub normal as the engine continues to break-in. Note that it has not blown up with a viscosity of only 7.8 at 100C.

This 20 grade oil is working well with this engine despite me lighting up the tires on a regular basis.

This is a misleading statement since kinematic viscosity does not correlate well with the operational viscosity in an engine. What you fail to emphasis is that your running a bio-ester based lubricant with a HTHS vis >2.9cP which really is more a kin to a light 30wt oil. This oil is 10 to 15% more viscose than your typical 20wt oil that has a HTHS vis of only 2.6cP.
 
Dr. Haas, With all that Zn in it, it looks like something other than an SM oil. Tell us what brand. Or, is this Terry's "Black Magic" formula?--Old tommy
 
It's RLI BioSyn 0w-20, as the thread title says. It's made to meet several industry specs but carries no actual approvals.

So this oil is near a 0w30? Even if it is he's still running something which the manufacture does not recommend. And the oil is working well, needs more highway driving tho
 
I have reviewed the specs of other tires that would work and have higher tread wear ratings. They ALL are heavier, several pounds per tire at least. I am not willing to give up the lower unsprung weight. Automotive engineers spend a lot of time trying to minimize the unsprung weights.

Absolutely agreed. The worst place for excessive/additional weight is at the tire and wheel.

I'm sure the Benz boys sweated the selection, odds are it's a good stock tire.

I highly doubt you would notice any difference in "spirited driving around town" with a few extra pounds of unsprung weight with 600+ HP and 700+ ft-lbs on tap and the monster brakes that car has, particularly in light of the fact that the car weighs over 6000 lbs.

Did your dealer beat or match the Tire Rack price? I've found around here when I've been comparison shopping the local tire shops can't beat Tire Rack's prices even considering the cost of shipping.
 
I paid maybe $25 more per tire in the end, including mounting/bal/.... But that was OK with me. I'll pay some more to keep the business in town. The MB dealership has always treated me well. I paid way less than their "normal" pricing.

Now if the difference was $100 per, then I would have purchased them from the Tire Rack first.

If the objective is to run the lightest fully formulated oil at start-up then the US made Castrol Edge 0W-20 would be a better choice.
It has a KV40 of 38.62cSt vs the 44cSt RLI publishes and also has a higher KV100 of 8.85cSt vs RLI's 8.6cSt.
At room temperature that translates into a 20% lower kinematic viscosity.
