I have been wondering what the difference between hastings and federated filters are because they are both made by hastings and i couldnt find a pics of cut open ones online so i figured i'd find out for my self, click link to see pics

The hastings filter is extremely well made except the pleats are poorly aliened but it is a bargain for only $5.75, the federated filter is a steal at only $1.99, the media is thiner and lesser than the hastings and the adbv barely makes contact with the top plate of the casing since it is two pieces(the cone in the middle is plastic),but other wise it will do fine.

When looking for a larger filter for the Subaru, I bought a Federated(hastings) and I cut one open and the media was shortchanged and the pleats not well aligned. Hey not bad for 2 bucks! I threw it away. I'll try and post the cut open pic shortly...

Clarcor makes top line Baldwin and Hastings filters (identical except for the paint and catalog number) and lower quality Casite and private label filters. It looks like the Federated filter is one of the lower quality ones--is it actually made by Clarcor?

By the way, Clarcor makes Purolator building ventilation air filters, not Purolator auto or air filters.

Is this better than a fram orange can? My tire place uses thes for their oil changes, is this legit for a 3k oci? What about a 5k oci, will it hold up? It seems the purolator classic is better, right?

Yes. The Federated filters are comparable to Casite filters, which is Clarcor's value line. This is similar to how Wix makes a Carquest Red (value line) and Carquest Blue (premium line). For a few bucks more, the premium Hastings and Baldwin filters are the way to go.

The Federated Auto Parts oil filters are good filters for 3K (I have one which I intend to use for 3K), but I agree that the premium Hastings and Baldwin Filters are much better ... I would advise buying them over the Federated filter.

I messed up, how does it compare to the fram orange or puro classic or champs lab filters quick lube places use or an stp encore or driveworks or microgard, and other economy filters? Is it better like the purolator classic or lower ranking like the fram orange can and is the anti drawback valve bad and causes dry starts like the orange fram?
