I am confused about the MB oil specifications for my 1993 602.962 and hope you guys can set me straight.

Do the MB specs 229.3 and 229.31 also apply to my vehicle or only MB 228.3 and 228.31?

Thanks.

Look on page 3 of sheet 223.2
Sheet 223.2 no longer covers 602 engines but one can extrapolate that all the 229 oils would be OK.
PLEASE NOTE that 228.31 (CJ4) oils are NOT recommended for 6xx series engines, ONLY 228.3 (CI4+) , 228.5 (super long drain Euro oils like my Delvac 1 SHC 5W40), and the 229 oils!
228.51 oils are allowed but unobtainable in N. America. 229.1 oils are not allowed at least for the newer 6xxs.

Charlie,

Thanks, the information on sheet 223.2 is informative.

Which of the 6xx engines would most closely represent my 602?

Thanks - Brad

I'm not sure any do, other than their basic automotive intention. The new engines are multivalve, piezoelectric injection control, direct injection, etc etc.
But they are as close as you are going to get.
There are lots of 228.31 (CJ4) oils that are also 228.3 rated

Let me rephrase my question.

Which engine listed in 223.2 would be best for me to look at that would indicate the MB oil specifications I may want to follow for my engine?

Thanks Charlie.

The 2nd and 3rd rows down in p.3 of Sheet 223.2, I think.
Since you don't have a DPF, and 228.3 oils are undoubtedly OK for your engine.

Hi,
Here are some older MB oil recommendations(look for "OM6xx oils not listed above" or "Sonstige, oben
nicht aufgeführte OM 6xx" columns)

SI recommendations (om60x engines in w210 and G-klasse listed)

The recommendation list in BEVO is being constantly updated..note that at one point 228.51 was forbidden(2006-2007) and later allowed.I still think 228.31 is more robust than 229.31 and wonder why it`s not allowed...but as m37charlie said, it`s usually combined with other MB categories(228.3 or 228.51)

The MBenz ratings are for diesel particulate filters - and - length of oil change intervals -generally the .31 or .51 rating is for a VEHICLE WITH A DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER or some other pollution control device .
Some are considered to be low to ultra low SAPS

Since I first posted this I have found that MB 229.3 and 229.5 applies to my 93 diesel. Looking for an ACEA B2, B3 or B4 will fulfill my needs.

I still use Delvac 15w40 in the summer but I might use 0W40 this winter.
