Reports I've gotten back from Blackstone labs measured insolubles as part of the test. In several reports I got back, they would say insolubles were low but the sample showed some soot beginning to accumulate, as if it were a seperate quantity than insolubles. Are insolubles and soot related?

I asked Blackstone that question too. If I'm remembering correctly, insolubles include soot, as well as "dirt". (or anything else in the oil that is visible). Their comment on soot might be from increased visco.

BobFout is right. Some places can test separately for soot, but with Blackstone, soot is lumped in with all the other stuff. Soot does tend to increase viscosity as it builds up.
