have a 1994 thunderbird that the tech @ wm said held 4 quarts of oil then the other tech said it holds 6 quarts due to the deep oil pan I have on it and they said it is not a 4.6 but a 5.0 how do I tell the difference between the 4.6 & 5.0 and how much oil do they hold??? ANY IDEAS ???

If you want iron-clad proof, open the hood and look for the little engine sticker. It should say on the top of it what it is. I am thinking 1994 was the first year the 5.0 was replaced by the 4.6.

I think you may be able to get a PDF of the owners manual on-line.

It should be the 4.6L engine in 1994. If I recall from my owning a 4.6L T-bird, it has a 5 quart sump with filter change.

I've owned half a dozen thunderbirds. The 94 4.6L is 5 quarts with a new filter..

The older 4.6L's have bad valve stem seals, so they like to burn some oil. I would stick with a 10w30 or 10w40 oil in these, especially if they have high miles.

The 94 did not have the 5.0L engine, it was the first year of the 4.6L v8.

The two other engines was a 3.8L v6, and a 3.8L supercharged v6.

Original Engine was a 4.6L. If its a 5.0 its had an engine swap. If it has overhead cams its a 4.6L. 5.0L was a pushrod engine. Any kid with a modified Mustang should be able to take one glance and tell you is its a 5.0 or 4.6.

Original Ford Spec was 5W-30. Ford has since back speced the newer 5W-20 for the engines.

Nothing wrong with the Motorcraft 5W-20 Synthetic Blend you can buy for $12 per 5 Qt Jug from WalMart if you dont have valve seal issues.

I would move up to a thicker 30 weight like Valvoline 5W-30 or 10W30 MaxLife (11.5 cSt at 100C/212F) if you have valve seal issues.
