The local Land Rover repair guru recommends Castrol 10W-40 for Land Rovers in the desert southwest, USA.

Does this jive with other's experiences?

I've used Castrol 10W-40 a 2002 Discovery, but noticed a definite "bog down" or "drag" effect as opposed to the 10W-30. It's to be expected.

I did notice, however, that it was not as bad when running Amsoil's 5W-40 European Formula. It was a bit quieter and smoother than both of those oils. Felt like it protected much better than the 30 wt as well. Try it out.

Stay away from high-wearing Mobil oils... For the price, you can get a better oil. Check out some UOA around here to see what I mean.

Which Land Rover model?

Look for for a document titled:
'Maintenance Fluid Specifications for
"Legacy" Land Rover Vehicles
10/01/05/NAS'

Should have all fluid requirements.

The doc version I have calls mostly for x40w SH/SJ oils
Freelander calls for full SYN API SJ. (an old doc)

I ran Rotella T 5w-40 year round in my '95 RR Classic LWB. Ran fine. Although I also ran 10w-40 in the summer for a couple of years. I thought that 5w-40 was ROW recommended.
