I'm wondering if the MC 15w40 that I see at Walmart is OK for my 1992 300D. This is the 5 cylinder Turbo Diesel. Is anyone using this oil in their older MB and care to report about how it is working for you?

I've heard it has specific additives for the PowerStroke engines and am not sure how they would be for my engine.

Thanks.

I think the additives where anti foaming agents? Something to do with the way the Powerstrokes injection system works I think.

I wouldnt be concerned with the adds, likely a bit of Na or similar if antifoaming agents... no worries.

If it is CI-4/CJ-4 it is a good spec. just keep thinking about Zn.

YOU really need to run a UOA to determine best oil for your application and driving style/profile.

Does it? For the engine in his car, ACEA specs may or may not be relevant. This is an issue weve been hitting here and over at peachparts.

The oil specs set forth by MB are no longer "relevant" to the diesel engine series in his car. Zn levels may be an issue. Optimization of lube is important to us, as MB diesels, because 500k is not just something talked about, it is expected as the norm.

Given the bearing design and pressures as I understand them, an ACEA A3/B3 oil HT/HS level at minimum would be relevant. B3 is probably the right specification anymore, vice the low SAPS MB 229.x specs. However Zn is important too...

Tough call. Perhaps ACEA is important here... perhaps not. That's part of the fun I guess.

Ok,,I have some friends in the courier business that drive Sprinters with MB engines and they use MB recommended oil and they do not substitute do to the nature and the diesels in those sprinters, they have a rule: Go By The List, the list is the recommended brand and name and grade in the owners manual for the Sprinters, has to do with soot levels , and all kinds of peculiar things on a MB diesel. Ok, that's the way they operate and at 45,000 dollars a unit, they go by the book.

WAY different set of conditions, let alone engine designs for the modern sprinter engine compared to the older engnes here in question - engines designed in the early 1970s at best in some cases, and definite 500k mile units if the oils are right.

The anti-foaming agents are for the common-rail HEUI injection pumps used in the Power Strokes-your 300D has the Bosch inline pump, should be a fine oil for it. Hope your '92 keeps the oil cleaner looking than my '82 300D!

The MC 15w40 is somewhat cheaper than the Delvac I now use. I figure I can save something like $2.60 per oil change. I'm not sure that it is worth the savings though with Delvac being such an outstanding product.

The oil is used in all sorts of diesel engines ,in boats , commercial semi trucks and vehicles inbetween. If the rating is good for your engine, Rotella will do its job.

You know MBenz says in the owners manual that you need to go to a dealer so he can use his special tools to reset the dash meter for service

not so - one can do it it without a special MBenz tool - more MBenz hyperbole

this is typical MBenz propaganda as to the specialism of their vehicles

they all use oil
they all burn diesel
they ain't all that special in the end

I have had other vehicles state that I need a special oil for them ------- after 20 years running regular oil , not so

YMMV
