Hear hear! I like the fact that all the debris trapped in a spin-on filter STAYS in the spin-on filter when you throw it away, rather than risk it dripping off in the canister and going back in the engine.
Canister filters are just another cost-cut, and a way to "encourage" (scare) people into using dealer (dis)service departments instead of DIY.
