Bypassing factory cooler altogether?

I already block the radiator in the winter so this would be easy enough to do.

Sounds like a good start.

My deville has both a radiator and aux cooler stock.

stock flow is trans --> radiator --> aux cooler --> trans.
flow with filter: trans --> radiator ---> aux cooler ---> filter --> trans.

and as stated before the radiator heat exchanger serves to both warm and cool the trans fluid.

Dont forget about flow.. I just got done installing a aux trans filter and I made sure it met the minimum "2 quarts in 30 secs" (1GPM) per factory specifications. It did 1.5 quarts in 15 seconds.

I used an empty gallon transmission fluid bottle that had the see through line and hash marks in quarts.

I unhooked the hose that goes back into the trans (after the rad., cooler, and filter) and had a helper with a stop watch start the engine and shut it off after 15 seconds and then looked to see how much was in the bottle.

and that was done after the engine was warmed up by idling. I dont have an engine temp gauge, so I just idled it until the engine fans came on.

If you dont have any specs to go by I would measure using stock configuration and then after modifications.
