Since my warranty ran out when the first bush was in office, what is the best ATF and/or additives to stick in my A4LD automatic?

The modern versions of this transmission (5R55E, 5R44E) use Mercon V, but I can't say for sure if that's what will work best in your transmission. Mercon V wasn't around until about a decade after your transmission was built.

I would guess that Mercon V would be okay to use in this transmission, but you may want to play it safe and just use a Dex/Merc fluid. Something like MaxLife Dex/Merc would probably be good.

Ford might have also spec'd different friction materials on certain parts depending on wether or not you are running merc5 or regular merc fluids. I know some of the Taurus transmissions are like that...... the A4LD and its variants might be as well.

I looked on Alldata it shows a TSB that says use Mercon V. So the least expensive supertech stuff should be good.
