Yep, I believe it has a Kinematic Viscosity @ 100°C, cSt of 12.1, whereas many/most other 5W-30 oils are around 10.3 or so.

oh, i cant find those anywhere and if i do, their about 8 dollars a quart.
what is next following german castrol?

im trying to stick to 5w-30 with the least burnoff...it seems amsoil is burning slightly faster than both valvoline and castrol.

I dont know about the thickness, but I have had excellent luck with Quaker State synthetics. They did not burn off unlike when I tried Mobil 1 EP last time.

I don't think that those same specs are met in the US for the Castrol Edge we get here.

Castrol Edge 5W30 in the States has a 100c vis of less than 10 as I recall.

Its not a matter of thick or thin. More in the formulation. How bout M1 high mileage - that must be in the upper 11's? I'll go look ... ... ...

Typical Properties

5W-30 10W-30 10W-40
SAE Grade
Viscosity, ASTM D 445
cSt @ 40º C 68.5 78.2 98.16
cSt @ 100º C 11.48 11.79 14.71
Viscosity Index, ASTM D 2270 162 145 156
Sulfated Ash, wt%, ASTM D 874 1.34 1.31 1.36
HTHS Viscosity, mPa•s @ 150ºC ASTM D 4683 3.4 3.66 4.06
Pour Point, ºC, ASTM D 97 -42 -54 -39
Flash Point, ºC, ASTM D 92 231 231 240
Density @15º C kg/l, ASTM D 4052 0.865 0.865 0.867

- look at the PP and HTHS on the 10w-30 - looks like a classic!

Mobil 1
Note 1 -- If your engine has excessive sludge deposits due to less-than-adequate maintenance practices, Mobil 1 High Mileage can help by reducing the sludge left behind by conventional oils. For severe cases of sludge, short oil change intervals (3000 - 5000 miles) are recommended for the first 2-3 oil changes as reduction of the sludge takes place. In cases of engine damage that may have resulted from poor maintenance, even Mobil 1 cannot remedy years of neglect.

thanks for the info
this is for a gasoline engine, not diesel

so i think im burning 1/5 quart per 1 - 1.5k miles and i want to stop it. I switched to amsoil from valvoline synpower and it seems to burning even faster. Do you guys have any recommendations?

and does synthetics really do burn more easily than syntec blends and conventional oil?

I would definitely try Valvoline MaxLife. I have had good results. Also, its noteworthy it has a full 30% syn in the blend. Most other blends have 10-15-20% syn.
