A friend has a 1946/47 Harley Davison Trike and the rear end gears are lubed with grease. Of course, a spec from those day's is nearly impossible to find. Anyone have any idea's on what type of grease for this rear end? It has a ring and pinion as well as spider gears that are fully greased with grease NOT gear lube.

What they came with was yellow paraffin based grease.
I would just use a wheel bearing grease, it should work just fine.

Is the unit contained in leak-free housing, i.e., is it possible to charge it with gear lube? This would be better than grease.

Wonder if the parafin type grease helped keep water from the road out? I am sure wheel bearing grease has that quality to it as well?

My friend mentioned that it has some type of felt grease seals. And I am sure it would be a machining pain to convert to a lube type seal. Interesting idea although.
