I didn't realize Johnson is about to win his 4th consecutive cup championship!

From the Hendrick Engines web page FAQ's "What kind of oil is used in Hendrick engines?"

answer: Quaker State Synthetic 20w-50 is used in open engines, Quaker State synthetic 5w-30 is used in restrictor plate engines.

I assume anti-wear films in synthetic oil have longer endurance than in conventional oil. do you think that would be the principal reason for using synthetic in a race engine?

Right. QS Racing oils are PAO/Ester based and probably really good.
