I've noticed that ~2008 that some formula changes took place (Penn YB, Motorcraft/ VOA's & UOA's) where the content of Boron went from 0 to ~100+ppm. I've read in other papers that it forms a permanent layer that is 85% the hardness of diamond on metal surfaces of the engine, then layers of the Boron (like graphite) slide over each other, creating an almost frictionless interaction (coefficient of friction lower than Teflon). Seems this is a component to want to have in an additive package.

Boron is also a boundary lube/anti-wear additive.
