Planning on flushing my sisters transmission this week in Cincinnati. SHe has a 2002 GMC Denali with the 6.0. I have yet to look at it, but her husband mentioned the trans pan has a drain plug and a indent in the middle of the pan. Not sure if this is the common 4L60E or the 65? Guessing without seeing I would think its the 60. 4L60E's hold 5 quarts with the shallow pan but I cant find any specs for the deep pan. Anyone know? Thanks

I heard that some of the GM 4L60E transmissions require a crossmember removal in order to remove the transmission pan.

If I recall correctly, the shallow pans hold 5 quarts and the deep pans hold 7.

Ok so it sounds like the deep pan on a this 4L60E is close in capacity to the 4l80E. Fortunately for me and the fact that my brother in law doesn't have too many tools, I won't be having to remove the pan. He just had the filter changed last week. Wouldn't be a big deal back home, but I hate diving into longer projects with the bare essentials. Thanks

Did they put the 4L60 behind the 6.0? I know in the trucks you get the 4L80 with the 6.0 IIRC.

I have been told that GM used the 4L65E on the 6.0 and another guy told me it should have the 4L80E? Who knows. Cant get a straight answer. Guess I will know after I crawl underneath it tomorrow. Thanks guys

4L80 is not used on 1/2 tons.

I know a shalow pan is listed, but I don't believe GM used one on full size truck after 1999. The 4L80E is used on 3/4 ton. I can't remember if it was ever used on any 1500 HDs. Trans used on half tons are 4L60E. 4L65E and starting in 2006 4L70E for the Vortex max 6 liters. Of course we now have the 6 speeds.

Fluid Capacities

Automatic Transmission, 4L80E Initial Fill..........7.7 quarts[2]
Automatic Transmission, 4L60, 60E Initial Fill..........5.0 quarts[2]
Automatic Transmission, Total Fill
4 speed 4L60E..........11.0 quarts
4 speed 4L80E..........14.0 quarts

2. With the ENG at operating TEMP, shift TRANS through all gears. Let ENG slow idle in PARK for at least 3 minutes. Check fluid level and add fluid as needed. Do not overfill.

Wix Trans Filter.....58847 [1]
Wix Trans Filter.....58608 [2]
Wix Trans Filter.....58836 [3]
Wix Trans Filter.....58904 [4]
Wix Trans Filter.....58917 [5]

1. 4L60E - Deep Pan
2. 4L80E - Deep Pan
3. 4L80E - Includes pan gasket
4. 4L60E - Shallow Pan
5. 4L80E - Shallow Pan - Pan Gasket not included - If Pan Gasket required, use 58836

THanks. Yeah I have heard many things about this truck but have never worked on one. The guy who claimed it had a 4L80 was a space cadet. I tried telling him about the 1/2 ton vs 3/4. He was adament about it so i just decided to agree to disagree. I have worked on many of the LS half tons which are very common and easy. She has the the Yukon Denali AWD SUV.

Planning on performing the work tomorrow afternoon. It will help to actually see what I am dealing with. I just like to gather some info prior to the planned day of service. Plan to measure what comes out of the pan and go from there. Thanks much

I worked in a GM dealership in 2004 and 2005 but I can't remember (stuff) any more. Retired now. Some years they offered the 1500 HD and some years they offered the 2500 light duty, about the same thing. I think the 4L80E was an option in the 1500 HD. I have a lot of that literature in the garage, just too lazy to look it up.

Yeah this is what was produced.
2001 to 2003 --> 1500HD
2004 to 2005 --> 2500
2006 to 2007 --> 1500HD

They were all Crew Cab trucks offered on the 2500 Light Duty frame (different from the 2500HD, 3500, 3500HD, and 3500 Chassis-cab).

If you have the 4L60E, maybe this info will help.

2001 Silverado with deep pan--

Pan drop and filter change, about 5 quarts.

Pan drain using the stock plug, just under 4 quarts. I have drained the pan 3-4 times and never used more than 4 quarts. Be really careful with the plug. A lot of people destroy them because they're tight and the bolt head is short

I'm not sure how my experience lines up with others' since the published specs are different.

It certainly won't have a 4L80E, those would only be found on a Yukon if it was a 2500 Yukon XL. The Denali would use the 4L65E I'm pretty sure. If not that it is a 4L60E.

The only 1500 trucks with a 4L80E were older (99 or before) 1500 Suburbans with the 6.5L diesel or the latter 1500HD trucks that were talked about already that were only crew cab models. Those were really 3/4 ton trucks they were trying to sell as 1/2 tons since they didn't have a 1/2 ton crew cab they could make yet. They were build the same as the 2500 trucks prior to the release of the HD line.

My 06 Denali Xl had a 6.0L and 4L60E. Deep pan. No plug.

UPDATE: Flushed 9 quarts of supertech ATF followed by 20 of Redline D6. I think its clean now! LOL. The pan capacity was 5 quarts and is a 4L65E. Thanks for all of the responses. She shifts like a dream. Now I have to convince my sis to invest in a Magnefine. Tomorrow its window motor replacement passenger door. Easy stuff. And Im on vacation! Only BITOGer's work on their relatives cars on vacation.
