Please help a computer dummy here. My old computer died (motherboard) and I have a new one. What is the easiest way to transfer my programs, etc to the new computer? The old hard drive is fine. The old one had XP, the new one, Vista. Any advice is appreciated.

Your programs will probably have to be reinstalled. Your documents, pictures, etc. can all be moved by the methods described in previous posts. :)

I agree with just installing the old hard disk in the new computer. You'll have to re-install all your applications anyway, but this is the simplest way to get at your data. Now's a good time for you to invest in a cheapo USB external drive and schedule daily or weekly backups. I actually just picked up a pair of 32GB USB thumb drives ($57 at newegg) and use those for nightly backups of anything "important" on my desktop and laptop. That would usually be "My Documents" on Windows and "/home/my_dir" on Linux.
