Ok, can of worms here...

I have been noticing that most of the absolutely insane high mileage stories out there have been on dino oil. I use synthetic, and I'm not alone in that on the forum. I'd like to hear your thoughts on why that is (high mileage stories mostly being dino)

Also, would like to hear your high mileage stories, current or past, and what kind of oil was used and what car...

460K KM (287K miles) on my old Dodge Caravan with a 2.6 Litre 4 Cylinder Mitsubishi engine using dino 10w30 SH rated oil.

If you knew this engine you knew it was seriously flawed, cracked cylinder heads, bad timing chains and burning oil were all common with this engine.

It made it this far before and electrical fire that totaled the car.

Usually, the people who hit high mileage on dino are untra-religious about maintenance and oil changes - the latter are every 3k on the nose, not a foot more.

Taking that kind of care and attention to any car will get it to high mileage.

Well, my first post will be a high mileage story.

I had a 91' Toyota Camry 4cyl. Used all kinds of different oils, 10w and 5w and who-knows-what-weights. Even used some "cardboard cans" that dad got at a garage sale (probably from the 70's). Sometimes changed oil at 3k, sometimes around 10-15k. Probably used super-tech and fram filters (can't remember). I beat the car into the ground. When I gave it away, it had a little over 400k all original except the battery and altenator and some fuses. The compression was suffering a little, but still drove it over 100 miles a day, never died on me. So the moral of the story is...sometimes cars just go, no matter what we put in them. Never done a UOA in my life. Probably never will. However, you all willing to shell out the dough, and I will pay close attention to what you say. Thanks

My 89 Conquest TSI started with that engine. Mine was a little different though being that it was the turbo version, and Fuel Injected (kinda) But those engines even with their problems were strong engines if taken care of. They used that g54b engine for everything from trucks to cars to Chrysler minivans to hi-lows.... I knew that engine inside and out.

very good point...and probably wouldn't want to spend the extra money with all the other maintenance coming up so fast when you're racking up the miles so quickly...but what about extended OCIs with synthetic...there's always that

Guy I work with has an 03(I think) Crown Vic that started as a taxi. He bought it 369,000 MILES on it, 4.6 pretty much no maint at all. It now has 397,000 on it.

I don't know if I'd call mine "super high mileage", but the Mustang engine is modified making 100HP more than stock, and has 330,000Km on it of ABUSE. I expect many more trouble free miles.

It has been fed M1 exclusively.

I have a second-hand story:

My automotive mechanics teacher had a VW Jetta that he put 1,000,000Km on using M1 in it.

He was on his second Jetta, which had something like 700,000Km on it at that point, also on M1. He swore by the stuff.

My 1994 Lexus LS400 has more than 240k miles, it had been fed with M1 5-10W30 for some years with OCI's of 12-15k/12mo, and dino with OCI's of 6-7k/6mo some other years, oil filter is changed only once a year. The engine is still running very smooth now and oil consumption is about 1/2 qt every 3-4k miles from beginning. No sludge can be seen from the fill hole, only slight vanish.

couldn't resist...lol

that's a good bit of info in favor of synthetics...I'd like to hear more like this if they're out there...seems to be pretty one-sided, although granted, there are more dino users in the world anyway, so that kind of puts the odds in their favor, but still...if synthetics are superior, we should have enough high mileage stories to support that as well

My old s10 2.2 5sp had 310k when i traded it, used 5w30 maxlife blend and fram every 3-4k. My co-workers escort zx2 has 190k using M1 5w30 and fram every 8-9k.

All the cars in my sig usually recieve a syn blend, but have never been fed full syn more than a couple times.

that's good info on that as well...shows that even with extended OCIs on synthetic, high mileage can be attained...that was going to be my next post topic lol...

But the 310k is more in the super high mileage territory, and it was 3-4k on dino/syn blend...interesting, kind of middle of the road

Just posted pics and info on my 89 Caprice hitting 500,000km's (310k miles) on the original engine still running good, with dino 5w30 oil changes ever 3-5k miles.
