I'm going to change the oil in the rear differential of my 93 ford aerostar and in my haynes manual it states to use a HYPOID lubricant? what is that?

I think that gl4 & gl5 cover hypoid lubes. basically a hypoid lube is required by the type of gears that are used in that differential as they stress the lube alot.

Hypoid gears have a lot of sliding action across the teeth, and they require a lot of extreme pressure additives to prevent tooth decay.

I think a good 75W-90 GL-5 synthetic gear oil would serve you well.

Right. Hypoid gears turn the power direction 90 degrees.
From the driveshaft to the wheels is 90 deg..
The gears do indeed slip a bit against each other, and have very high local pressure spots.
A true rear end differential oil is required. Normally, the bottle will say if it is suitable for differentials and will be GL5.
