Free Codec Packs for XP and Vista

I have found, by far, the best solutions are the K-Lite codec pack, or the newer CCCP pack. Both are easily found by Googling.

Also, you can always just use the VLC media player.

I've sorta learned to steer away from all-inclusive codec packs. FFDShow works well for me. Add Haali Media Splitter for MKV, OGM, & embedded subtitle streams, VSFilter to display subtitles, Gabest Flash splitter for FLV, and Real Media Alternative for RM stuff.

OTOH, CCCP is a nice, safe pack to install.
 
I use K-lite on my winders machine. On all other platforms I use VLC as my media player and it manages to sort out all the codecs by itself.
