Hello,
I just recently purchased a Honeywell Hw2000i generator. The Oil recommendation is 15w-40 API rating of SF or better. Honeywell told me I can use any 15w-40 as long as it is not specifically formulated for diesel engines. Kinda hard to find. I ended up finding Shell Rotella T that is formulated for both gasoline and diesel. Now my question.
Shell advertises Sythetic Rotella T 5w-40 that out performs its coventional 15w-40. Does that mean I can safely run this in my generator? It has API rating of SL. I understand the API ratings, I am curious if I change the weight if it could have adverse effects.

Thanks,
AndrewM

If the oil has both gas and diesel ratings it should be fine. I.E a 15W40 that has both SL and the corresponding "C" rating should work.

I think what Honeywell is saying is don't use an oil that only has the "C" rating.

Gas or diesel rated isn't a concern at all. That's old school misinformation (C-rated only oil as Java stated). I'm glad to see a 40wt spec for a small air cooled OHV engine for once! Nice little inverter unit BTW.

Honeywell lists it only as "4-Stroke, Single Cylinder, Air-Cooled, OHV, 125cc, big bore." 125cc is approx a 3-4hp. It's probably a little OHV Chinese made engine.
