No Isuzu engines in Escorts, AFAIK. the 'SPI 2000' was an all-Ford engine - it was an 'update' of the 1.9-liter.

The Zetecs are a Ford engines as well, but I think there was input from Mazda on them. they are great engines - won't have many problems with them at all!

Good buddy of mine had a 1998 Escort ZX-2 w/the 'SR' engine package - it really scooted. Without any exageration, he beat the snot out of this car for 8 years/130k miles, and it ran like a top when he traded it. Hardly used any oil.

Addyguy is correct. The Escort/Tracer 1997-2002 sedan and 1997-1999 wagon used the SPI (SOHC) 2.0. It was an update of the 1.9, but the engine was all new except for the camshaft. The 1998-2003 ZX2 coupe used the 2.0 ZETEC DOHC, which is a close cousin to the SPI. Bore, stroke, and bore centers are all the same dimensions between the SPI and the ZETEC. No Isuzu or Mazda engines here.

However, from the 1991 model year the Escort and Tracer were related to the Mazda 323/Protege. This might be the source of the confusion about the powertrains. According to Grassroots Motorsports a few years back, some suspension and other components will interchange.

I thought the SPI and ZETEC engines had absolutely NOTHING to do with each other - weren't they totally different designes/dimensions?

The single SPI 2.0 lasts up to 150,000 miles.I did put in a set of rings in a Ford Focus with that engine with 146,000 miles on it.Most yards will tell you this including one in my area.

I thought the Escort GT of that era DID use the Mazda 1.8L engine, FWIW.

Between 1991 and 1996 it did. In 1997 the Escort GT went away.

I can't, by the way, remember the last time I saw an Escort GT. Did they actually sell any?

Yeah, they did, but they rusted/wore out quick, espcially with hard driving....

Our associate pastor had one back in the '90's. He was single and right out of seminary. All the Little Old Ladies were trying to fix him up.
