I bought this used 3Com 2816 (16 1Gbps ports) switch. It works great except that it's pretty noisy. It's got two 4cm fans that spin at over 8k rpm. The manufacturer rates them at 32 dBA for noise and 10.1 CFM for air flow.

I want to replace the fans with these:

Any thoughts? I already ordered the fans, so it's kind of a done deal, but was just curious what you think anyway...

For whatever reason, networking equipment always has low quality noisy fans. I wouldn't hesitate to replace them, especially if they're in a low temp environment to begin with.

I've certainly been in enclosed racks that are over 120 degrees (hot to the touch) and poor 3com has to design products that will work in environments like these. A switch on a table at room temp could probably get away with half the airflow and be fine.

+1

Just keep them dust free and all should be well...
