A very technical overview of how oil samples get analyzed in the lab. Much of it may make your eyes glaze over, but the first couple pages should be understandable to most folks. It has a good list of the sources of various wear metals and a very extensive bibliography.

Bear in mind the article is almost 30 years old, so it's not entirely accurate anymore. The author uses atomic absorption (AA) instruments which would not be used these days as they can only check one element at at time. More likely ICP instruments would be used as they can check them all in one go.

I find it interesting to see their graph of iron content in oil over time drops during the wear-in period. Not sure where it's going.

The website has several ICP oil analysis papers too, but they are almost purely technical. Beware!
