GC vs. Edge

lars11,
As pointed out above, in the US, Edge 5w30 "exceeds" A1/A5. Since the an oil cannot meet A1 and A3 (mutually exclusive HTHS), are you saying that EU Edge 5w30 is different than US Edge 5w30? I do recognize that "exceeds" does not mean "meets."

I saw it at a Walmart in nw NJ for $7.47/quart, for a 5 quart container it was $34. This was for 5W-30 and 10W-30.

Same price at WallyWorld here in Northern Va.

I would buy Amsoil before Castrol at $7.99 per qt on general principles. Would the customer base at wallys buy That high priced oil?

That is your version of Edge 5w30, the US is not so lucky to get the same contents in a product with the same name.

Well, I just asumed that Edge xwx would be the same. But obviously not... Good work, Castrol product management! :) Naaaae!

Seems the primary benefit to US Edge over other US Castrol products is long drain capability. And it’s possibly the only long drain oil that meets GM4718. I suppose that might be worth a hefty premium to some. Beyond that US Edge appears to be nothing special, whereas many/most non-US Edge oils meet the tough requirements of VW, BMW, and Daimler.

The relative performance tool on Lubrizol’s site is an interesting tool to compare oil specifications. Assuming it lives up to it’s name and offers a reasonable comparison of relative performance differences between oils, there are significant differences in wear protection between some specifications. In particular, the wear protection requirements of many VW, BMW, and Daimler oils are significantly tougher than those of SM, GF-4, and pre 2008 ACEA oils (which are all very similar). However, the newer 2008 ACEA specs appear to raise the wear protection bar significantly.

^^^ thats a great tool there. looks like the best oil is a vw507.00 or mb229.51. wonder if any oil can be had stateside meeting those specs?

FWIW, I have a 2008 BMW 535i. I'm currently using CG there as Castrol is recommended by BMW and GC meets BMW LL-01 and ACEA A3 specs.

I just purchased a new 2008 Volvo XC/70. I was considering GC for the Volvo, as Volvo now recommends Castrol as well. But Volvo specifies oil tht meets ACEA A5. So my tendency is to stick with GC in the Bimmer and start using Edge 5W30 at initial break-in Oil Change in the XC/70.

The only diff between MB 229.5 and 229.51 is in the aftertreatm, ent campatibilty, and if you add ILSAC GF-3 to MB 229.5 it is almost the same as 229.51.

GC meets 229.5 and GF-3 as well as VW 50301, and it looks like a GREAT oil on that Lunrizol site.

I use GC in my 2004 BMW 530i with great confidence.
