This was a response our chief chemsit had with regards to Euro V.
Hopefully this will shed some light on the different specs.

“On the heavy duty diesel side the Schaeffers 9000 can be used in the Euro V emission engines. Engine oils that are designed for use in the Euro V engines must meet the new ACEA E9-08 category which just recently went into effect. The ACEA E9-08 category is based upon the API CJ-4. ACEA E-9 is recommended for use in vehicles fitted with advanced after treatment systems such as DPF for the reduction of particulate matter and NOX emissions as controlled by EGR and selective catalytic reduction (SCR).

For light duty diesel engines that meet Euro V emissions specifications where advanced after treatment devices such as DPF and three way catalysts are used the engine oils used must meet one of the new C categories. The C categories have 4 sequences C1, C2, C3, C4. The 4 different C categories have very restrictive limits for the amount of phosphorus, sulfated ash, sulfur contents. The limits are as follows:

ACEA C1

Sulfated ash
Phosphorus
Sulfur < 0.2%

ACEA C2

Sulfated ash
Phosphorus >0.07% and < 0.09%

Sulfur < 0.3%

ACEA C3

Sulfated ash
Phosphorus >0.07% and
Sulfur < 0.02%

TBN > 6

Oils must also meet MB 229.31, 229.51, VW 502.00, VW 505.00, VW 505.01, BMW Longlife 04. Typical viscosity grades are SAE 5W-30 and SAE 5W-40

ACEA C

Sulfated ash
Phosphorus
Sulfur < 0.2%

TBN > 6

Finally in regards to the ACEA specifications unlike the API Service Classifications the ACEA specifications do not have a licensing body the oversees formal approvals.”
