I'd disconnect the HD power to prevent damage to the unit and just let it boot from a live CD of Edubuntu. That way, there are no persistent changes to the OS (works every time) and no fear of damage to the system hardware or software.

Live CDs do not touch your HD at all. Just set the BIOS to boot from CD 1st and disconnect the HD. It should work fine. RAM is used as a disk by the OS and only those data that are necessary are resident in memory. The rest is on the CD, which gets quite a workout.
